Rec Sports Unveils $54 Million Expansion and Renovation

Texas A&M Rec Sports has announced details for the $54 Million renovation and expansion of the Student Recreation Center, set to begin Monday, March 24.  The project, which includes 56,000 square feet of renovation and more than 113,000 square feet of new construction, will be funded without an increase in students’ Rec Sports fees.

The Rec Center has essentially operated at capacity since opening in 1995 and has seen over 1.2 million entries by members and guests each year. As university enrollment and patronage of Rec Sports facilities and programs has consistently increased each year, students’ aspirations of a facility upgrade are finally coming to fruition.

In total, the expansion will increase the size of the Rec Center by 25 percent. Specific improvements to the facility include:

  • Increased Strength & Conditioning Space – Size of the current weight room, which houses both strength & cardio equipment, will double and will include the addition of a personal training suite, and an indoor turf area for movement training such agility and speed work, plyometrics, bodyweight and core training exercises.
  • Additional Gymnasium – Increasing open-recreation opportunities by adding multi-use court space that can accommodate two basketball courts, four volleyball courts and one soccer court.
  • New Activity Rooms – Three new activity rooms will be added to provide additional space for Group RecXercise, Specialty Classes and heavy bag/boxing. Two larger multi-use rooms will be constructed to accommodate student groups and outside events, and a large, auditorium style, meeting room (seating approximately 120) will also be added.
  • Second Entrance – An additional entrance will be built on the south side of the facility, facing Olsen Field.
  • Outdoor Plaza – An outdoor plaza will be constructed on top of the expanded weight and fitness room, which will include a large patio space with outdoor kitchen facilities.
  • Additional Pool – An eight-lane, twenty-five meter indoor lap pool will be added to reduce scheduling conflicts with aquatic events in the natatorium.
  • Natatorium Renovation – Retrofitting of all mechanical components, as well as cosmetic upgrades including new tile, paint, lighting, bleachers, etc.
  • Lighting Retrofit – Replace all light fixtures throughout the facility to improve light efficiency and reduce energy cost.

Plans were finalized earlier this month after Dallas-based Satterfield & Pontikes Construction, Inc. was selected to lead the long-awaited expansion.  Marmon Mok Architecture out of San Antonio is leading the design of the project, which is expected to be complete in fall 2015.  The facility will remain fully open throughout the expansion/renovation project, and member access to the Rec Center should not be significantly hampered during the construction.
