Expansion News

Rain, Rain, Go Away!

Although the weather has caused many challenges throughout the Rec’s expansion & renovation process, the project is still moving along nicely. Though we’ve seen some minor setbacks with the recent inclement weather, the overall goal of this project remains the same; providing everything possible for the Student Rec Center to better serve the Texas A&M community.

NEW GYMNASIUMS:

Currently, on the south side of the building, structural steel for the new gymnasiums is being laid. After structural installation is complete, we will begin to see a roof and walls enclosing the new gymnasium.

“With the new gymnasium they are really making tremendous progress! You can see all types of ventilation ducts, vents, and all the things that will eventually be covered by ceiling tiles. It’s really exciting because you can see where everything will be located once the project is finished,” said Texas A&M Rec Sports Senior Associate Director, Rick Hall.

INDOOR LAP POOL:

As for the new indoor lap pool, the underground foundation piers are completed. The next step in the process will be installing the grade beams, followed by pouring concrete for the basement floor. This process will not begin until concrete for the entire first floor of the weight room has been poured.

WEIGHT ROOM EXPANSION:

The grade beams for the basement of the weight room were recently completed and the floor boxes for all the cardio equipment have been installed. This process will be followed by pouring concrete in the first half of the main floor. Unfortunately, due to the recent weather, the second half of the weight room expansion has received the most delays, but the contractors are working hard to get the project back on track. Once the concrete for the entire first floor of the weight room has been poured, construction will then move to the new Indoor Lap Pool.

ADDITIONAL CLOSURES:

The outdoor pool was recently re-opened, although at this time, the pool can only be accessed through the west entrance, located on Olsen Blvd.

Thanks & Gig ‘Em,
